Top Five Eyeshadow Brands (Cruelty-Free)

I’m a big eyeshadow fiend, which I think is pretty obvious by now. Here are some of my favorite cruelty-free eyeshadow brands, in case you want to start wearing eyeshadow also, but don’t know where to start. Please note that by cruelty-free, I mean brands that do not themselves test their products and ingredients on animals. For that reason, I have included cruelty-free brands that are owned by parent companies who test. I will state which ones are owned by whom. 1. Le Métier de Beauté Le Métier de Beauté is a beautiful brand from New York City. They make small quantities of their exquisite inventions, which makes me want to buy them ASAP. One thing I have a hard time saying ‘no’ to is their limited edition Kaleidoscope Eye Kits ($95), four-tiered eyeshadow palettes that are especially designed to be layered on. Sometimes, the pigmentation of these shadows leave a lot to be desired, but they blend like a dream. I never really understood how “blendability” can affect how much you love an eyeshadow …

Pinky Up with bareMinerals’ READY 8.0 eyeshadow in The Cocktail Hour

So, for my first bareMinerals haul, I got two of the eight-pan palettes from their READY line. I reviewed the first one I got (The September Issue) already, pretty extensively, over here. The other one I got (The Cocktail Hour) I wasn’t even eyeing, but the sale price was just too much to resist. At $17, down from $40, I get eight top-notch shadows in colors that–let’s face it—are actually more me. The palette comes with a full-sized mirror and a double ended brush. The colors are: Black Tie Optional — a matte grey black Icebreaker — a cool frosty pink nude with a bit of shimmer Swanky — a shimmery midtone plum with warm red undertones Spiked — a frosty pinky peach coral Elixir — a frosty pinky lavender Invite Only — a frosty metallic taupe with olive undertones Libation — a warm champagne with somewhat frosty finish with reflective shimmer Shaken Not Stirred — a deep navy with a matte finish and blue shimmers I love the story that this palette tells. To …

Be the Life of the Party with bareMinerals Ready 8.0: The September Issue

I just can’t get enough of bareMinerals’ READY eyeshadows. They’re truly top-notch quality with an extremely velvety texture and wide selection of shades. I first picked up a READY duo in France during a wait for a train (bored people go to Sephora), then a quad about a month or so after. When bareMinerals went on sale, I decided to pick up two eight-pan palettes since they were marked down, and also because I felt bad about missing out on The Playlist, which I had been eyeing. Hello, Retail Therapy. You rang? (Although, I think I just have unnaturally grabby hands.) Anyway, here’s the first—and more expensive—of the two, The September Issue. I picked this up partly because of the name. I have always dreamed of working in magazines, and also, I am a September baby! I think this palette gives me room to play around more, too. I gravitate towards more neutral anything, and I’m at a place where I’d like to be more adventurous. The September Issue seems to invite that quality. There’s …

October Favorites

Maybe kind of late, but still helpful, I think. There’s not a lot I can say about my October favorites, because while I did hoard towards the end of the month, I only got to use most of them extensively in November, pre-makeup ban*. Here are a few stand-outs that I have loved last month. 1. Guerlain Écrin 4 Coueleurs Eyeshadow in Turandot (Reviewed here) Turandot is part of Guerlain’s Holiday 2012 collection. It’s a “Écrin 4 Coueleurs Eyeshadow,” which is just a fancy way of saying “eyeshadow quad.” How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Actually, it’s not all that complicated. It’s an upstanding palette, with a very warm and neutral overall look, but all the individual shades are still quite different from each other. There’s a pretty shimmery goldenrod, a rust-rose satin pink, a matte deep mauve, and a shimmery dark grey-brown, all rolled into one delicious pocket-sized wonder, mmm. How happy am I that this isn’t limited edition? Very. 2. Bronzer No specific brand—just the wonder of bronzer in …
